Algarve: the best surf spots

The land of a million beaches

Welcome to the Algarve — every surfer’s dream destination. Towering ochre cliffs, sea caves, and sandy golden beaches stretch along more than 150 kilometres of coastline at Portugal’s southern tip. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on two sides and bordered by pristine nature parks, the Algarve is a paradise for surfers and nature lovers alike.

Good Feeling Surf School is based in Raposeira, between Sagres and Lagos, giving us quick access to over a dozen surf beaches on both the west and south coasts. That means we can always find the right wave for you — sheltered south-coast beach breaks on big swell days, or powerful west-coast peaks when the ocean is calmer.

Our Favourite Surf Beaches

Praia do Zavial — A sheltered south-coast reef break that works on bigger swells. Consistent, fun waves for intermediate and advanced surfers, with a stunning cliff backdrop.

Praia do Beliche — Right next to Cape St. Vincent, this pocket beach delivers punchy beach break waves. Great for practising turns and getting comfortable in steeper surf.

Praia da Luz — A wide sandy bay on the south coast with gentle waves, making it one of the best beginner surf beaches in the Algarve. The charming town of Luz is right behind the beach.

Castelejo — A dramatic west-coast beach surrounded by black cliffs. The wave here can be powerful, but on mellower days it’s a fantastic spot for progressing surfers.

Bordeira (Carrapateira) — A huge stretch of sand with multiple peaks. Something for everyone — mellow whitewash for beginners and hollow sections for experienced riders.

Praia Do Zavial

Raposeira / Algarve

We currently go out surfing to about a dozen beaches in the Algarve. The best ones to learn to ride the waves are the Zavial and Castelejo beaches. We frequently go out there for our lessons. Though of course, we check the waves and weather of the day and surf out to the best location possible!

Surf Conditions in the Algarve

The Algarve enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year and consistent Atlantic swell, making it one of the most reliable surf destinations in Europe. Here’s what to expect through the seasons:

Spring (March–May): Building swells, warming water (16–18°C), uncrowded lineups. Great for improvers.

Summer (June–August): Smaller, clean waves ideal for beginners. Water temperatures reach 20–22°C. High season — book early!

Autumn (September–November): The sweet spot. Warm water, increasing swell, offshore winds. Perfect for all levels.

Winter (December–February): Powerful swells for experienced surfers. Water around 15–16°C. Still plenty of sunny days between swells.

We provide quality wetsuits year-round, so you’ll be comfortable in any season.

Surf Forecast

We are lucky that, being able to reach both the West and the East coast as well as having fantastic weather most of the time, we can go out surfing most days of the year. Check out the surfer forecast in the region for the next days and drop by our Surf School to book a day out on the waves!
