Reaching Praia da Luz is a breeze, with several transportation options available. If you’re traveling by car, simply follow the N125 west out of Lagos and follow the signposts to Luz. Alternatively, regular bus services connect Praia da Luz to major cities and towns in the Algarve, providing a convenient and affordable travel option. Parking in Praia da Luz is plentiful, with various options available near the beach, ensuring both space and safety for your vehicle.

If you’re heading to the Algarve to surf, Praia da Luz is definitely worth a visit with beach break waves to suit every level. Whilst surf isn’t always guaranteed in Praia da Luz in the summer months when swells are smaller, in autumn, winter and spring, you can find quality peaks all along the beach when the conditions permit.
Best for Beginners:
Generally, the central beach provides easy and forgiving waves for beginners to hone their skills on. Bigger days can result in lots of current and close-outs and should be avoided by beginners as should the left and right sides of the beach where rocky outcrops make surfing dangerous.
Best for Advanced Surfers:
High period swells from the west during the winter months can result in some dreamy days at Praia da Luz.
Facilities at Praia da Luz
The beach is the heart of the town so there’s a wide range of facilities on and around Praia da Luz. Surfing in Praia da Luz has a real urban feel and it’s great to get out of your wetsuit and straight into a cafe for a Galão (a typical Portuguese milky coffee) and a bite to eat. Throughout the summer months, you’ll also find:
- Lifeguards: The beach is large and manned by a team of lifeguards so bathing and surfing for beginners can be done with peace of mind. However, lifeguards are off duty during the winter.
- Sunbed & Umbrella Rentals: There are a number of options for hiring sunbeds in the summer months if you require one.
- Showers and Toilets: The beach is well-maintained and has public bathrooms open in the summer months.
Best Surf Conditions at Praia da Luz
Although it’s on the south coast, Praia da Luz faces slightly West, and as a result, it often picks up waves that hit the peninsula at Sagres and wrap around. In winter these tend to be more powerful and on a solid swell, Luz can be a dreamy spot to surf.

Jacaranda: Once you’ve eaten at Jacaranda, you’ll be immediately planning your next visit. We recommend going for whatever’s on the specials board – you won’t be disappointed.
Habana Bar: A great option for breakfast, lunch and maybe even a cocktail after surfing. Habana Bar has a great menu to match its excellent terrace and view of the beach.
