Planning your surf holiday in Sagres? Here are the answers to the most common questions we get from guests, beginners, families, and returning surfers. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, get in touch — we’re always happy to help.

Surf Lessons

Do I need any surfing experience to take a lesson?

Not at all! Most of our guests are complete beginners who have never stood on a surfboard before. Our qualified instructors start every session with a beach warm-up and theory on the sand, covering safety, positioning, and the pop-up technique before you ever get in the water. We also offer intermediate and advanced coaching for surfers who want to take their skills to the next level.

What does a typical surf lesson include?

Each surf lesson lasts approximately 3 hours and includes transport to the best beach for the day’s conditions, all equipment (surfboard, wetsuit, and rash guard), a warm-up session, surf theory on the beach, and around 1.5–2 hours of practice in the water with hands-on coaching. Our instructors choose the beach each morning based on wind, tide, swell direction, and your skill level — so you always get the best conditions possible.

What is the maximum group size?

We keep our groups small — a maximum of 8 students per instructor — to ensure everyone receives personal attention, safety guidance, and actionable feedback. Private lessons are also available for 1-on-1 coaching if you prefer faster progression.

How many lessons do I need to stand up on a board?

Most beginners manage to stand up and ride whitewash waves during their very first lesson! By the end of a 5-day surf course, the majority of students are comfortably catching and riding waves on their own. Progress depends on fitness, coordination, and ocean comfort — but our instructors are experts at getting people on their feet quickly.

Do you offer private surf lessons?

Yes! Private lessons are perfect for surfers who want undivided attention, faster progression, or personalised coaching on specific techniques. They’re also ideal for couples or small groups who want a tailored session. Contact us to book a private lesson.

Can children take surf lessons?

Absolutely. We welcome kids from age 6 and up. Children’s lessons are adapted to be safe, fun, and encouraging — with smaller boards, shallower water, and extra attention from our instructors. Family surf lessons are also available so parents and kids can learn together.

What time do lessons start?

Lesson times vary depending on tide and conditions — we always choose the time that gives you the best waves. You’ll receive confirmation of your lesson time the evening before or early that morning. Typically, lessons run in the morning (around 9:30–10:00 AM) or early afternoon.

Surf Camp & Accommodation

Where is your surf camp located?

Our surf camp is located in Raposeira, a charming village between Sagres, Vila do Bispo, and Lagos in the western Algarve. It’s perfectly positioned to access over 30 different surf beaches along the south and southwest coast — from sheltered south-facing beaches to the powerful Atlantic-facing breaks of the Costa Vicentina Natural Park.

What’s included in a surf camp package?

Our surf camp packages include accommodation in our cosy surf hostel, daily surf lessons with all equipment, transport to the beach, breakfast, and access to communal areas. You’ll also benefit from our local knowledge — we’ve been surfing these waters since 1997 and know every secret spot. Check our surf camp page for detailed pricing and package options.

Do I need to book for a full week?

Not necessarily. While our weekly packages offer the best value (and the most progression!), we offer flexible options from single-day lessons to multi-day surf courses. Just tell us how long you’re staying and we’ll create the perfect surf experience for you.

Is the surf camp suitable for solo travellers?

Definitely — solo travellers make up a big part of our guests! The surf camp has a welcoming, social atmosphere where you’ll quickly connect with other surfers from around the world. Shared dorms are a great way to meet people, and our communal areas are designed for hanging out, sharing stories, and planning beach trips together.

What’s the food like at the surf camp?

Breakfast is included daily and features a healthy, hearty spread to fuel your surf sessions — fresh bread, fruits, cereals, coffee, juice, and more. The communal kitchen is fully equipped if you want to cook other meals. Raposeira and nearby Sagres have plenty of excellent Portuguese restaurants for dinner — we’re happy to recommend our favourites.

Beaches & Conditions

Which beaches do you surf at?

We access over 30 beaches within a 5–15 minute drive, including Praia do Zavial, Praia do Beliche, Praia do Tonel, Praia da Mareta, Praia do Amado, Praia da Cordoama, and many more. Our instructors check conditions every morning and choose the best beach for your level — that’s the advantage of being based in this area, where south-facing and west-facing coastlines give us options in almost any wind or swell direction.

When is the best time of year to surf in Sagres?

Sagres is a year-round surf destination! Spring and autumn (April–June, September–November) offer the best combination of warm weather, consistent waves, and smaller crowds. Summer (July–August) brings warmer water and smaller, beginner-friendly waves. Winter (December–March) delivers bigger swells for more experienced surfers, and our south-facing beaches still offer sheltered conditions on many days. Water temperature ranges from 16°C in winter to 22°C in summer.

Is the water cold? Do I need a wetsuit?

The Atlantic water temperature in the Algarve ranges from about 16°C in winter to 22°C in summer. We provide quality wetsuits with every lesson — typically a 3/2mm fullsuit — so you’ll stay comfortable in the water year-round. In summer, some surfers opt for shorties or just board shorts, though we always recommend a wetsuit for longer sessions.

Other Activities

What is coasteering, and do you offer it?

Coasteering is an incredible coastal adventure that combines cliff jumping, rock scrambling, cave exploration, and wild swimming along the dramatic Sagres coastline. Yes, we offer guided coasteering tours! It’s suitable for anyone with reasonable fitness and a sense of adventure — no experience needed. Our guides know every hidden cave and jump spot along the coast. Learn more about coasteering.

Do you offer SUP (Stand Up Paddle) tours?

Yes! Our SUP tours take you along the stunning Algarve coastline, exploring hidden caves, secluded beaches, and dramatic cliff formations from the water. SUP is suitable for all fitness levels and a brilliant way to enjoy the ocean on calmer days. We provide all equipment and instruction. Check out our SUP tours.

Practical Information

How do I get to Sagres / Raposeira?

The nearest airport is Faro (FAO), about 1.5 hours’ drive west. You can rent a car, take the EVA bus service to Lagos and then to Sagres/Vila do Bispo, or we can help arrange a transfer. If you’re driving from Lisbon, it’s about 3.5 hours south on the A2 motorway. We’ll send you detailed directions once you book.

Do I need travel insurance?

While surf activity insurance is included in your lesson, we strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers sports activities for your entire trip. This should cover medical expenses, trip cancellation, and personal belongings. Portugal has excellent healthcare, but insurance gives peace of mind.

What should I bring to my surf lesson?

We provide all surf equipment (board, wetsuit, rash guard). You just need to bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen (reef-safe, please!), water, and a good attitude. We recommend leaving valuables at the accommodation. Flip-flops or sandals for the beach are handy too.

What’s your cancellation policy?

We understand plans can change. Cancellations made more than 48 hours before your booking receive a full refund. Cancellations within 48 hours may be subject to a fee. If we need to cancel due to unsafe conditions, we’ll always reschedule or refund. Contact us for full terms.
