Within a 20-minute drive, you can access beaches facing south, southwest, and west — meaning there’s almost always somewhere with clean, rideable waves regardless of wind or swell direction.

Best Beaches for Beginners
1. Praia do Amado — The Beginner’s Playground
Location: 20 mins north of Sagres (Carrapateira)
Facing: West
Best swell: NW to W, 0.5–1.5m
Best wind: East or northeast
Best tide: All tides (mid-tide is ideal)
If you could design the perfect beach for learning to surf, it would look a lot like Amado. This wide, sandy bay catches plenty of swell and breaks it into gentle, forgiving whitewash and small green waves that are ideal for standing up for the first time.
The beach has multiple peaks spread across its width, so even when it’s busy, there’s space to practise without feeling crowded. The sand bottom is clean and flat, the currents are manageable, and there’s a café right on the beach for post-surf refuelling.
Local tip: The southern end of the beach tends to be more sheltered and smaller — perfect for absolute beginners. Intermediates should head to the peaks further north where the waves have more shape.
2. Praia da Mareta — The Town Beach

Best swell: Large S or SW, 1.5m+

Sagres’s main town beach sits in a sheltered south-facing bay, making it a reliable option when the west coast is too big or choppy. Mareta needs a decent-sized swell to produce surfable waves, but when it does, the conditions are clean, mellow, and perfect for beginners.
The harbour wall on the east side can create a fun little right-hander. The sandy bottom and easy walk from town make it incredibly convenient — you can literally walk from breakfast to the waves.
Local tip: Mareta works best in summer when south swells wrap in, or in winter during big swell events when everywhere else is maxed out. Check the forecasts — when Amado shows 2m+, Mareta often has manageable 0.5–1m waves.
3. Praia da Ingrina — The Hidden Gem
Location: 15 mins east of Sagres (near Raposeira)

Best swell: Large S or SW

This tiny, sheltered cove is one of the area’s best-kept secrets for beginners. Ingrina is ultra-protected, meaning it only picks up the biggest swells — and when it does, the waves are small, gentle, and ideal for first-timers. The shallow, sandy water and calm conditions make it especially good for kids and nervous beginners.
Local tip: Ingrina is also a fantastic spot for SUP — on flat days, the clear water is perfect for paddleboarding along the cliffs.
Best Beaches for Intermediate Surfers
4. Praia do Zavial — The All-Rounder
Location: 10 mins east of Sagres
Facing: South-southwest
Best swell: S to SW, 0.5–2m
Best wind: North or northeast
Best tide: Low to mid tide (point break); all tides (beach break)
Zavial might be the most versatile surf spot in the entire Sagres area. The beach has two distinct sections: a right-hand point break on the east side that peels along the rocks, offering long, workable waves perfect for practising turns and trimming; and a beach break section with fun, punchy peaks.
The point break is the real prize here — when a clean southwest swell hits at low tide, you can ride waves for 50–100 metres with a smooth, predictable face. It’s the ideal wave for intermediate surfers looking to progress.
Local tip: Arrive early — Zavial gets crowded, especially the point break section. Parking can be tight in summer. The beach bar serves excellent fresh fish.
5. Praia do Castelejo — The Dramatic One
Location: 20 mins north of Sagres (near Vila do Bispo)

Best swell: NW, 0.5–1.5m

With a towering sea stack (Pedra do Lume) standing offshore and enormous cliff faces on either side, Castelejo is one of the most visually stunning surf beaches in Portugal. The beach break offers fun, powerful peaks that work well for confident intermediates.
It’s slightly more sheltered than neighbouring Cordoama, so on bigger days it can offer a more manageable option. The peaks shift with the sandbanks, so it pays to watch for a few minutes before paddling out.
Local tip: The cliffs create shade in the late afternoon — plan your session for morning or midday for maximum sunshine and the best light for photos.
6. Praia do Tonel — Sagres’s Showpiece
Location: Sagres (below the fortress)
Facing: West
Best swell: SW to W, 0.5–1.5m
Best wind: East or northeast
Best tide: Mid tide (avoid very low tide)
Sitting directly beneath the famous Fortaleza de Sagres, Tonel is arguably the town’s most iconic surf spot. It’s a powerful beach break that picks up a huge range of swells and produces fast, punchy waves with occasional barrels.
The left-hander along the southern cliff is Tonel’s signature wave — when it’s working, it’s one of the best waves in the Algarve. Confident intermediates can handle Tonel on smaller days (under 1m), but it ramps up quickly and can be powerful.
Local tip: Watch out for the rocks on the south side. The current can push you towards them, especially on bigger days. Respect the locals here — it’s their daily surf spot.

7. Praia do Beliche — Raw Power
Location: Between Sagres and Cape St Vincent
Facing: West-southwest
Best swell: W to NW, 1–2m
Best wind: East or northeast
Best tide: Mid to high tide
Beliche is not for the faint-hearted. Nestled between towering cliffs, this compact beach produces some of the most powerful, hollow waves in the region. The shore break alone can be brutal — thick, heaving walls of water crashing onto steep sand.
But paddle past the impact zone, and Beliche rewards experienced surfers with fast, barrelling peaks and a lineup that’s often surprisingly uncrowded (those steep cliff stairs act as a natural filter). On its day, this is a world-class wave.
Local tip: Check the swell carefully — Beliche goes from flat to heavy very quickly. The descent down the cliff stairs is steep but well-maintained. Don’t leave valuables in your car in the parking area.
8. Praia da Cordoama — The Big-Wave Arena
Location: 18 mins north of Sagres
Facing: West
Best swell: NW to W, 1–2.5m
Best wind: East
Best tide: Low to mid tide
Cordoama is a stunning kilometre-long beach beneath some of the tallest cliffs in the region. It produces powerful, open-face waves that can get seriously big on larger swells. The peaks shift along the beach, and on clean days you can find waves breaking over 200 metres from shore.
It’s less protected than most beaches in the area, so it catches the full force of Atlantic swells. When it’s working at 2m+, Cordoama is a proper big-wave beach that demands respect.
Local tip: The access road is unpaved and bumpy — drive slowly. The headland between Cordoama and Castelejo is a brilliant vantage point for checking both beaches before deciding where to surf.
9. Praia da Arrifana — The Algarve’s Best Right
Location: 30 mins north of Sagres (Aljezur)
Facing: West-northwest
Best swell: NW, 1–2m
Best wind: East or southeast
Best tide: Low to mid tide (the point)
Slightly further afield but absolutely worth the drive, Arrifana is home to one of the Algarve’s most famous waves: a long, powerful right-hand point break that peels along the southern cliff for 100+ metres. When it’s clean, it’s genuinely world-class.
The beach break in the centre also offers good waves for intermediates, and the dramatic bay setting with cliff-top restaurants and views makes it a special place to spend a day.
Local tip: The point break gets very crowded when it’s working — arrive at dawn for the best waves and smallest crowds. Respect the priority system.
10. Praia da Carrapateira (Bordeira) — The Endless Beach
Location: 25 mins north of Sagres
Facing: West
Best swell: NW to W, 0.5–2m

This enormous beach stretches for over 3 kilometres, backed by dunes and marshland. The sheer size means you can almost always find a peak to yourself, even in peak season. The waves are consistent and varied — from mellow peaks for intermediates to powerful barrels on bigger days.
The river mouth at the south end can create interesting sandbar formations. The northern section tends to be more exposed and powerful.
Local tip: Park near the boardwalk entrance and walk north — the further you go, the emptier it gets. The sunsets here, with the dunes glowing golden, are some of the best in Portugal.
